Unremarkable Families

DNA tests for the families from Dorset

The families of the paternal line of Tom Galton of Poole, Dorset

The DNA results show a good range of matches to persons with DNA tests on both Ancestry and MyHeritage.

The persons that share DNA sequences with one or more of the close family mapped on MyHeritage or GEDmatch can be seen on DNA Painter; the links to the family DNA results are on the 'DNA Test Information' page.  You can expand, contract and look at individual matches as you like; the key at the side shows which of the matches are thought to be from the individual ancestral lines. You can also switch from all matches to Paternal or Maternal using the line at the bottom right under the coloured key. Persons with names between #....# are persons with known family links as well as DNA matches. These people will appear with a DNA symbol next to their name in the Person Index on this site.

The charts for this group of families is quite large and also shows some unresolved issues with the early members of the families because of their origins in a small geographical area with intermarriage across several lines.

These families are Galton, Anstey, Grady, Lander, Corben, Chinchen and Nineham and their ancestral charts are on 'The Families of Dorset' page.

The origin of the Galton family before Thomas Galton is currently unclear. There are DNA matches with family trees that suggest Galton but, so far, it has not been possible to pinpoint which of a number of Galton families in villages in Dorset are the origin. There are also various spellings of Galton/Golton/Goulton. However, DNA matches and suggested persons in the research by others do suggest an origin of Galton at East Lulworth as Galtons from there are known from the early 1600's.  The current tree on this site makes some assumptions encompassing this link. As more comes to light the connection to the area of Dorset called the Isle of Purbeck and its families becomes more certain.  Some of this work is supported by the Newfoundland DNA matches.

Not only do I have the close family DNA tests to work with but also three people who have DNA connections to Newfoundland allow me to access their test independently. Progress is being made on these matches but there are two issues influencing the work.  These seem to be the number of links between families actually in Dorset before 1750 or even earlier and the potential for intermarriage and NP events in small communities dotted around the Newfoundland coast.

His wife, Susannah Pelley Anstey is much better established, The Anstey family goes back at least to the late 1600's and have DNA matches to Newfoundland families as well as English ones which have been a significant help. However their connections to families in Newfoundland are many and complex and are being worked on.
